Republicans Do
Published on October 16, 2006 By Ionolast In Politics
There's been quite a lot written (mostly if not completely by right-leaning people) that celebrities are vain, out of touch, pampered, etc. Let's look at the list:

Ronald Reagan
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Sonny Bono
Fred Thompson
Clint Eastwood

All were elected on the Republican ticket. I can't think of any Hollywood celebrities who have been elected as a Democrat.

Then there was the circus sideshow in California when the role of Republican Governor was up for grabs. The casting call included the trapeze artist (this one took a bit of a stretch of the imagination) the midget and the strongman. The strongman won.

For the most part, people who vote Democrat know better than to elect an actor, but for the most part, people who vote Republican elect the same kind of person they claim to hate.

Yeah, there is a bit of irony isn't there!

The other irony is, the hollywood types that are the most critical of the president never seem to be willing to put their money where their mouth is and run themselves.

Eh, I would not include Clint in the group.  He was more a POed citizen that did not like what Carmel was doing to his place, so he decided to do something about it.  He never had higher ambitions, and I dont think anyone would fault him for that.

As for the rest, Reagan had a lot of prior experience, and the others did play on their name.  Time will tell on some, and the others - well, informed is always better than ignorant.

Considering the play Rob Reiner and Warren Beatty keep getting, I'd hardly call Democrats immune to the blockbuster mentality that has infected politics. It appears the Dem celebrities are more willing to play backseat driver than actually run for something, though.

Fred "Gopher" Grandy (of The Love Boat) is another actor turned Republican politician.

Fred "Gopher" Grandy (of The Love Boat) is another actor turned Republican politician.

And he did omit Ben "Cooter" Jones.  He actually served in Congress before being redistricted out, and he was a democrat.

They know they can't get elected as Democrats.

I forgot about him.

I don't remember him.

I don't remember him.

Dukes of Hazzard!  He was the Mechanic.  Was a rep down in Georgia.  Tried to move to Virginia and win another seat, but he ran in one of the most conservative districts in the state (I know, I voted against him).
